What type of dog should my fiance and I get (we can't agree)?

My fiance and I just bought a house and are looking at buying a dog after this winter (we live on a larger lot in Nebraska). Unfortunately we cannot agree on a dog...I want a great dane because I think they are gorgeous looking dogs that fit my more laid back lifestyle and his need to play style and he wants a boxer or lab because he doesn't like the lifespan of great danes and how large they are. I love their size and want a not so typical dog (and will be willing to take care of a larger dog). He doesn't prefer small or extra large dogs. He's more into dogs that everyone loves and EVERYONE has (medium sized). We need to find a happy medium that fits both of our lifestyles. We want a dog that likes to lay around and be loved, is intelligent and will play when you want to play. Any suggestions would be appreciated! :)
