Using a different iphone sim card?

I have an at&t phone with an unlimited data plan(texting and web). Is it possible for me to get an iphone and put in my sim card, allowing me to keep the same monthly rates, while still maintaining all of the functionality of the iphone. Also, would the iphone have to be unlocked to do this?
